Seven Reasons to Join the Friends of the Smoky Hill Museum
Posted by Susan Hawksworth on 03/20/2014
Whether it’s birthday, graduation or anniversary time in your family, sometimes finding a gift that folks will actually use and enjoy can be a challenge. While (daily/everyday?) admission to the Museum is free, giving an affordable, annual membership to the Friends of the Smoky Hill Museum is a great way to ‘give a little something extra’ to a friend or family member, to have a lasting impact. Just in case this (type of) gift has not occurred to you before, here are 10 fun/compelling reasons to do so this season.
- No Storage or Repair Required
Most families don’t need more “stuff.” Well, a Friends of the Museum membership does include a card, but there are no sharp edges, parts to break, or batteries to buy and install, and no (hidden/unwanted) calories!
- Shop ‘Til You Drop/Shop But Don’t Drop
But if your special folks DO love to shop, the Museum Store has intriguing books on noteworthy and infamous Kansans, unique, local desk sculpture and pottery, gourmet-food treats like flavored nuts and Sunflower Seed Cookie Mix, and affordable games, toys, and Wizard of Oz gift items, to give to yourself or others. Also, affordable greeting cards as well as one-of-a-kind cards featuring original work by local photographers are available.
- Give A Little, Get A Lot
Many families love that it costs nothing to enjoy the Smoky Hill Museum again and again. By giving an annual membership for a little as $35, you can teach them about the value of giving back and of helping to preserve Salina’s evolving historical tapestry, in which every person has a significant story to tell.
- Weather-Free Zone
Especially on really cold or hot days, the Museum is a comfortable, climate-controlled environs in which young and old can safely play, discover and meet others like-minded others who are curious and creative.
- Just My Size
Little ones have fun, too. While small children may appreciate the “spectacle” of a place just for grown-ups, the Smoky Hill Museum’s interactive children’s area and each Central Gallery exhibit particularly offer games and learning experiences especially for their skill and level. And since the Museum is specifically designed to be intergenerational, family and friends of all ages can learn and play together.
- Date Night/Girls Night Out.
Friends of the Museum membership does entitle adults to receive exclusive invitations to Opening Receptions, seasonal parties and more, which can make for an inexpensive, easy-to-get-to date or friends night out. Free parking and free admission will let you save you dollars for dining out or to enjoy other local cultural attractions.
- Just Relax/No Stress Allowed
In the midst of overcrowded classrooms and hectic parenting schedules, it can sometimes be hard to be as “in the moment” as you’d like, in support of your child’s optimum lifelong learning. Moments/Time spent at the Smoky Hill Museum encourage memorable conversations and an unhurried question-and-answer time, resulting in an inspiring enrichment environment designed to help your children and students challenge themselves in new ways.
